One of the most unexpected lessons I’ve learned as an engineer– but it’s saved me 100’s of hours!
Often in my work, I’ll need a part that is VERY specific. Naturally my go-to answer is to fire up SolidWorks and make a custom model for manufacturing, but I miss a critical step!
One small question that could save me hundreds of dollars!
That question: Does anyone already make this?
Think about it. What would be cheaper?
Option 1: Custom designing the manifold shown above from scratch and having a machinist make it.
Option 2: Finding it online and buying it from McMaster-Carr who mass-produces them for cheap.
Here’s another secret. If you don’t find exactly what you need, buy the closest thing and modify it to be what you need! Someone else has already done most of the work for you.
Stay scrappy! 🐺
